Breast lumpectomy
A breast lumpectomy is usually performed after a previous biopsy or needle aspiration has been done, and it has been determined there is a malignant (cancer) tumor present. During the lumpectomy, a small incision is made to remove the tumor and some surrounding normal breast tissue (margins). This is considered a breast-conserving procedure. Often due to the denseness or thickness of the breast, a special procedure to locate the tumor is done in mammography just prior to surgery under local anesthesia called Pre-Op Needle Localization. This involves placing a small needle wire inside breast to localize the tumor for the surgery.
Sentinel node biopsy: If a patient is also having a Sentinel Node Biopsy, you will have a separate small incision under the armpit. If lymph nodes are to be removed under the armpit, a special procedure in Nuclear Medicine is done just prior to surgery. Often a blue dye or small amount of radioactive material will be injected into the breast. The dye/tracer moves to the lymph nodes and helps identify which lymph nodes need to be removed for testing. All tissue removed from the breast is sent to pathology (lab) where tests are done to identify the type of tumor, and whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. This assist in staging of the cancer. The pathologist will also check to make sure the margins are clear.
Both types of procedures take 1-2 hours and are typically performed under general anesthesia.

Excision of lesions, cysts, masses, lipomas
During an excision procedure, a small incision is made to remove a skin lesion, cyst, lipoma, or mass. The specimen is sent to pathology to identify the type of tissue. There may be small paper tapes in place under bandage that are to be left in place until they loosen and fall off. An excision procedure can be performed under local, general or local with sedation; your surgeon will discuss this with you prior to the procedure. The average length of time for this procedure is 30-90 minutes, depending on the size of the specimen and the tests being performed.

Gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy)
A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a less invasive way to remove the gallbladder. This surgery uses a scope which is attached to a camera allowing the surgeon to see inside the abdomen by a monitor, and is performed through four to five small 1/2 inch incisions.
The average length of surgery time is one hour, during which the patient will be under general anesthesia.

Hernia repair surgery
At Good Samaritan, we perform two kinds of hernia procedures: open and laparoscopic.
Open Hernia Repair: During this procedure, an incision is made and sutures/stitches are used to close defects in the abdominal wall. Mesh may be used to reinforce the abdominal wall and prevent hernias from recurring. Mesh is sutured/stitched over or deep to the weakened area in abdominal wall after the hernia is pushed back in place.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: This procedure is a less invasive way to repair hernias. During the procedure, a sugeon uses a scope, which is attached to a camera, allowing the surgeon to see inside the abdomen by a monitor or TV screen. The procedure is performed through 3 small 1/2 inch incisions.
General Anesthesia is required for laparoscopic hernia repair and local, spinal, or general anesthesia may be used for open hernia repairs. The average length of surgery time is between 30 and 60 minutes.
